The comedy duo is a staple of pop culture, an archetype with roots in vaudeville. With a few changes, one member of the pair is always straight and the other is scary. Sometimes, the dynamics are increasing the strangeness of each other. Going back to acts like Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello (who made a successful transition from stage to film) every generation has famous posters.
Baby boomers saw more variety in their comedy groups, with the Smothers Brothers mixing music on their stage. This helped set the stage for new comedy couples like Sonny and Cher. However, not everyone needed extra talent to be funny. Mary Tyler Moore and Ed Asner bring their charisma to the fore, and together, they bring the comedic duo into the modern age.
Today, we have many funny duos on the big screen, from popular songs to ordinary ensembles. Just one warning: don’t take Tina Fey and Amy Poehler personally. They’re the best friends we’d all love to meet, but outside of “Saturday Night Live,” they’re rarely seen together.
Celebrity Couples Who Have Been Together The Longest
Constantly appearing together since they met on the Canadian comedy show “SCTV” in the 1970s and 80s, Catharine O’Hara and Eugene Levy are hilarious wherever they appear. Pulling off each other effortlessly, these two comedians are difficult in different ways. Usually it’s Levy who plays it straight, while O’Hara gives off the perfect vibes. Christopher Guest often compares Levy and O’Hara in his mockumentaries. As “Best in Show” proves, they don’t want to show what their characters can be.
Today, O’Hara and Levy are best known for their roles as Moira and Johnny Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” Canada’s answer (and for many fans, an improvement) to “Arrested Development.” This long-standing duo has six seasons of building a ten-year friendship. The differences between Roses’ business and the aptly named town are displays of the main attraction of everyone who plays with each other in a humane and humorous way.
Steve Martin and John Candy are both funny, but their only movie together, 1987’s “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” is a comedy. It’s so cute and understated that it makes us feel like these two have been together forever. The key to their comedic chemistry is playing a lot on their physicality. As a straight man who tends to be angry, Martin is strict. However, Candy is so cute and friendly that she gets angry. However, they have a lot to learn from each other. But first, they have to get out of the frozen Midwest.
Famous Co Stars Who Really Enjoyed Kissing Each Other
Both comedians have honed their skills in comedy, with the humble and loud Candy winning “SCTV,” a show that will give Martin some great screen partners, including Rick Moranis and Martin Short. Steve Martin can change his tone on a dime. Although he is a straight man of Candy, Martin’s first comedy with 1979 “The Jerk” shows that Martin can be a perfect bender. All in all, their timing was perfect. Today, Martin still remembers Candy with love and a heavy heart.
Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor made four films together, with Mel Brooks’ classic “Bizzing Saddles” being one of them. However, Pryor’s sense of humor is still evident in the script, emphasizing the professional collaboration the two men had. Released in 1976, “Silver Streak” was their first project together, and for some (myself included), it’s still the best and the train-heist-gone-wild plot. This was followed by 1980’s “Wake Up the Madman” and 1989’s “See No Evil, No Evil”.
Although Wilder and Pryor made another film, 1991’s “The Other You,” it unfortunately doesn’t deserve a mention. The first three are their great works, in which both men are wise or humble as the time demands. Their chemistry is irreplaceable. Professionals to the end, they were partners on the screen, but not real friends. However, they gave us more than funny movie memories to appreciate, and you should watch one of their collaborations now.
The Top 20 Video Game Duos
The 90s saw a huge resurgence in popularity of Hong Kong martial arts films thanks to the power of artists such as Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li and Jackie Chan. While all would go on to make their mark in Hollywood, it was Chan who became the pinnacle of American action comedy. In 1998, New Line Cinema produced a cross-cultural buddy comedy, pairing Chan with rising star Chris Tucker, who was looking for another hit after “Friday” and “The Fifth Element.”
“Rush Hour” became a franchise, taking the classic “Lethal Weapon” formula and adding Chan’s stunts and Tucker’s fast-paced comedy. Their culture clash isn’t played for easy racial laughs, and the pair turn their on-screen chemistry into a real-life friendship that lasts. While “Rush Hour 4” remains the subject of rumors, the first three films are a fast-paced mix of thrillers and comedies.
As for the comedy team of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, let’s skip that Sherlock Holmes movie, shall we? is a

, and everyone knows it. Why focus on the negative when “Stepbrothers” and “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” exist as perfect pearls of comedy and absurdity?
“Talladega Nights” was the first match between these two cornballs who always wanted to outdo each other. It’s rough stuff when they’re both in a better place with Sacha Baron Cohen, but when it comes to serious racing movies, Reilly and Ferrell come out on top. The “Step Brothers” bring children together two years later when they are forced to grow up (slightly), risking their comfortable life together. The dirty secret of this crazy couple is that John C. Reilly is a great actor who can do real drama. He’s so serious about it that he understands pitch and timing the way Ferrell sometimes does.
After decades on stage and screen, you’d think that Penn & Teller’s classic comedic powerhouse would finally begin to fade from the lights. However, they remain as strong as ever. Working as a duo since 1970 and maintaining a Las Vegas residency at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, Penn & Teller combine the comedy of Penn Jillette with the quietness of Teller as they create amazing illusions on stage. If it works, it’s a no-mess gig. Sustained success means they are doing something great.
Most Iconic Disney Characters
Penn & Teller sometimes use their comedy to talk about big issues like they did with the hit series “Penn & Teller: Bullsh*t.” Seven times, the pair used the platform to discuss pseudoscience and politics. Now they appear on “Fool Us”, a magic competition show aimed at impressing famous tricksters. They also appear in unexpected places, including one TV appearance in “Babylon 5” as intergalactic clowns Rebo & Zooty, and Pain & Terror in a “Mad Max”-style boss fight in the video game “Borderlands.” 3.”
Look, Statler and Waldorf may be a Muppet couple, but they’re real in our hearts and souls. Usually the best part of “The Muppet Show,” those old-timers stay behind the action and take in everything that would be brutal if not so funny.
Named after two grand old hotels in New York City, the Waldorf-Astoria and the Statler Hotel (although the Waldorf-Astoria still stands, the Statler, called the Hotel Pennsylvania, is closed), these rebellious old men rarely leave.
