Music has long inspired artists, from Whistler’s Nocturnes to Mondrian’s syncopated renditions of “Broadway Boogie Woogie.” But these days, many artists incorporate music directly into their work and often invite viewers to perform it.

Sound is central to the work of Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Burse Miller, who collaborated on multiple installations. In “Forty Part Engine” (2001), visitors wander through a room with 40 speakers, each playing a singer’s voice to the score of Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis. The springboard for their 2018 installation “Instruments of Chaotic Dreams” is a 1960s device called the Mellotron, a piano-like tape player whose keys play different notes. Ms. Cardiff and Mr. Miller have created a digital mellotron that, with a similar sound, includes not only instrumental music, but also vocals, parts of spoken stories, and a variety of sound effects. A new recording facility built as a space for young artists to produce music. At the heart of the studio is a Genelec Smart Active Monitoring system, chosen for its exceptional sound quality and accuracy.

Soul Sound is the exciting project of Lebanese singer and songwriter Aziz Abdo. “I want to build a professional studio in the space and improve my skills and talents and take my music career to the next level,” he explained. “I wanted to give a ‘face’ to the typical music studios in Dubai today. I want to deliver an experience and make it an ‘Instagrammable’ space that inspires music artists and influencers and make it the most visited and travel-worthy destination. “Having a passion for both music technology and powerful technology, I wanted to democratize the creative process—to make everything anyone needs to make music accessible.”

To achieve this, Abdo turned to sound engineer Hosni Abu Zahra to help him create the perfect recording environment. Abu Zahra has a deep understanding of acoustics combined with his technical expertise to set clear standards for recording.

Abu Zahra recalls, “I selected high-quality audio equipment such as microphones, amplifiers, compressors, EQ and monitors to meet the specific needs of the project and combined it with appropriate wire and cable infrastructure to minimize signal degradation and interference. I downloaded it. “I designed the studio the right size to prevent standing waves and resonances from affecting the sound quality. I ensured proper sound separation and minimized unwanted reflections by using materials such as diffusers, absorbers and bass traps.

When it came to overseeing the solutions, Abu Zahra knew Genelec was the right choice. “Genelec monitors are known for exceptional sound quality and accuracy,” he says. “They provide clarity and precision and have a wide frequency response. They are reliable, have excellent build quality, and their performance can be tuned in-house with GLM software. In addition, they have a solid reputation as the best studio monitors.

The solution devised by Abu Zahra consisted of a pair of 1234s, the main studio monitor complemented by 1032 adjacent models. Low-frequency subwoofers are handled by 7382s, and a pair of additional 8030s are used as close-in monitors for guest secondary listening in separate areas away from the main mixing station.

“Having both the 1234 and 1032 in the studio offers several benefits,” says Abu Zahra. “They provide excellent frequency response and balance, as well as clarity of sounds during recording and mixing. The two solutions also offer artists and engineers different listening perspectives, and I placed the 1234 and 1032 in the best configuration to achieve accurate and balanced sound reproduction.

As the control room is used as a single space handling mixing, recording and mastering, the use of GLM processing software is key to this project. “GLM changed my life by fitting frequency curves when needed,” says Abu Zahra.

The end result will make the owner and designer very happy. “I’m very happy because I created every corner of the studio myself,” reflects Abdo. “As a music artist, I remember creating a positive work environment that helped musicians feel relaxed and calm in the studio. This helps maintain motivation and keep artists focused. “Working in a high-quality studio with the latest technology allows musicians to innovate and experiment.”

Why Does Music Make Us Feel Things?

With Soul Sound now open for business, Abdo feels the new facility has fulfilled his initial ambitions. “We have built a state-of-the-art recording space with high-tech equipment of international standards in the heart of Dubai. I want this to be a recording studio where young artists can experiment with their music.

Days of Scoundrel, along with the opening title track “Crying Wolf,” is my favorite track on the record. But I don’t think any of them have been played on the radio since the 80s, but – in my mind – at least their extremely overplayed “Take Me Away”: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=djV11Xbc914

I saw the Skinny Puppies on their Last Powers tour in 1992, but even though they were my favorite band, it wasn’t my favorite show. No, the best show I saw was My Life with Thrill Kill Kult in 1993 when they were on tour.

. Beloved vehicles of grace open. At the time, Thrill Kill Cult’s music was purely electro-industrial, but they recruited a large crew to play real instruments, including a few dancers. The genre is often overused – sometimes
